My name is Brittany Schmidt and I was born and raised here in Wisconsin.  Although I grew up in a small town, I have always had the heart of a big city girl.

The large campus located in the heart of the city is one of the main reasons I chose to attend the University of Wisconsin Madison.  I am currently a senior double majoring in Journalism/Mass Communications and Theatre/Drama.

It may seem a little strange that I am majoring in journalism and theatre, but I find them to be very much alike.   For the longest time, I could not figure out what I wanted to do with my life because there was never that one thing that I knew I was going to be or do when I grew up.

I was beginning to think that I would never have that famous epiphany that everyone brags about.

From high school on, I was taught that you go to college to become a doctor or lawyer.  You went for something that was practical and highly thought of by others.  I had always had a passion for writing and communication, but I put that on the back burner because I thought that was more of a hobby and I should do something that really helped people.

So I listened to everyone’s advice and decided to major in the medical field my first year of college.  I was convinced that this was the only path that I could really help people on a day-to-day basis.  As I got deeper into the biology and statistic classes for the medical field, I started to realize that this was not the right career path for me.

Due to the fact that I loved to create and write about different topics every single day, I knew I was not going to be happy giving shots to people day in and day out.  I wanted a sense of risk and spontaneity with my job, the chance to create something new every day and never knowing what adventure the next day would hold.

Writing was the only outlet that allowed me to fulfill this creative and spontaneous edge that complimented my true character.

The passion behind this blog is to create something new everyday.  Anything.  I could write about politics one day and relaxation techniques the next.  I get the chance to investigate, create, and explore.

Writing has become a channel for me, sort of like a lifeline to the rest of the world.

This is exactly what I plan to do on this blog, write about exciting topics, dig deep into how media influences society, and give a different perspective on topics every week.  For me.  For you.  For the rest of the world.

I have recently become an opinion columnist at the Daily Cardinal, giving me a distinct voice among 40,000 students. I am also involved with the Daily Cardinal media production team, where I help create and edit videos about important events on campus.   I love to keep up on current events, campus news, and reading the New York Times.  Like I said before, I have the heart of a big city girl.  I am deeply involved in Facebook, but am working on my Twitter skills, which are limited to say the least.  Although I may be a beginner, I am eager and ready to learn as much as I can so stay tuned!
